empowering young women
21 young women in Malawi completed a drone technology training program delivered by MicroMek, a Malawian drone technology startup focused on low-cost autonomous aircraft. The program aimed to equip them with practical skills in drone operation, maintenance, and related STEM competencies.
The training was designed to build technical expertise and encourage creative thinking and innovation, not just basic skills. Participants learned how drones work, how to pilot them, and how drone tech can be used for real-world applications like data collection and environmental monitoring.
The initiative reflects broader efforts in Malawi and across Africa to increase youth participation in STEM, especially among girls and young women, by providing accessible tech education and mentorship.
